Brewers' Golf Society Summer Update

24 August 2022

The Brewers' Golf Society Spring Meeting trophy is presented

The Brewers’ Golf Society had a most enjoyable series of matches coming into the summer, including:

Prince Arthur Cup Inter-Livery Golf Tournament, 19 May 22. The Brewers were represented by Nick Miller, Rooney Anand, Bruce Ray and Jonathan Neame (Prince Arthur Cup newcomer). The format was a challenging as ever (foursomes bogey golf ) but the lovely Walton Heath courses were in fantastic condition and a joy to play (or walk around?). Thirty seven livery teams entered into this prestigious cup. The Brewers’ were unable to secure a victory, which went to the Leathersellers’ Company team, but a lovely day was had by all.

Spring Meeting, 24 May 22. The Denham course was in great condition and lunch was, as always, first class. Contrary to a weather forecast of heavy showers through the day, mainly sunny conditions prevailed for the first 14 holes through the morning round. Then the heavens opened with a hail storm turning the lush green course into an alpine ski scene! It was suggested that the 8th green, the 17th hole, was reminiscent of a challenging black run! Adam Jones (pictured with Ewan Harries) was the winner of the Saville Cup with 36 points. Following the very substantial three course lunch the London Brewers’ pairing of Henry Fox and Nic Armitage secured the Woodward Tankards with a score of 16 points for the 9 holes played. The provision of a buggy may well have aided their post lunch performance some 17 years after their last victory in this match.

Match vs Vintners, 15 Jun 22. After 3 years the match with the Vintners’ was back on at Tandridge golf course (last year was aborted due to heavy rain and flooding). It was a beautiful day and the manicured Harry Clot course was in great condition. All matches were keenly contested, with the Brewers’ retaining the trophy.

Match vs Distillers, 23 Jun 22. The annual contest between the Brewers’ and the Distillers’ proved to be a classic with the Brewers’ retaining the trophy courtesy of a hard fought 3-3 draw. This makes the running total Brewers’ 19 wins, Distillers’ 2 wins, halved matches 4. West Hill was in its pomp immediately after their ‘Pro-Am’ resulting in the players having to cope with slick greens but otherwise benign conditions. Lunch was, as ever, a highlight with the West Hill relaxed dress rules proving popular.

Marketors’ “Ryder Cup” Livery Fellowship Golf Day, 4 Jul 22. Some good individual scores (Paul Nunny 38 points, Gary Boyes and Ewan Harries 37 points) failed to translate into winning scores at individual or team level. The sponsors for the day, James Hambro and Partners were very generous in their support and over £2,000 was raised for the Lord Mayor’s Charity.

The Brewers’ Golf Society is looking forward to some great matches to round off the year, with the Autumn Meeting taking place at Huntercombe Golf Club on 8 September, the annual match vs Diageo at Woking Golf Club on 29 September and the annual match vs staff and students from Aldenham and Dame Alice Schools at Old Fold Manor Golf Club on 29 September.
