Brewers' Lectures 2022

On 22 February the Master Brewer visited Dame Alice Owen and Aldenham Schools to deliver the annual Brewers’ Lectures to Sixth Form students.

The Brewers’ Lectures were established in 2014 by the then Master, Stephen Goodyear, in order to encourage among the students of the schools supported by the Brewers’ Company an understanding of both the science and art of brewing, and the opportunities for further education and careers in the brewing and hospitality industries.

This year the Master, Richard Fuller, spoke to the students about the history of Fuller, Smith & Turner, one of Britain’s oldest extant breweries, with origins dating back to the early 1600s, around the time the Schools themselves were established; he also taught them about the science behind the brewing process and spoke about the importance of UK pubs.

He was followed by Sarah Dickinson, Recruitment Manager at Fullers, who gave an overview of some of the many opportunities for careers in the hospitality industry. She noted that not many people join the hospitality industry knowing that it is what they want to do as a career, but more often than not they fall into it and only subsequently fall in love with what they do and decide to make a career out of it; she went on to show the many ways that the industry is working to change perceptions of careers in hospitality.

As ever, the lectures shed light on the wide variety of opportunities the brewing and hospitality industries offer. The Brewers’ Company seeks to back this up by working with its members to provide advice, mentoring and work experience for any young people considering a career in brewing or hospitality.
